Photoelectric, not ionisation
Every reputable safety authority in Australia now recommends photoelectric alarms over ionisation. Photoelectric alarms respond much faster to the smouldering fires that kill most people in their sleep. If your existing alarms are ionisation (round with a radioactive symbol on the back), they should be replaced.
Hardwired with battery backup
New builds and substantial renovations must have 240 V hardwired alarms with battery backup. Retrofits are strongly recommended to follow the same standard where a licensed electrician can access the ceiling.
Interconnection
