Renovations are where hidden electrical problems surface. Once the plaster is off, the old rubber-sheathed cable, unearthed lighting circuits, undersized sub-mains and dodgy DIY additions all come to light. Handled properly, a renovation is your best chance to bring the entire home's electrical up to modern standard while the walls are already open.

Assemble Electrical is a local renovation electrician for Yamba and the Clarence Valley. We work with builders, kitchen companies and homeowners on projects from a single bathroom refit through to full home renovations, extensions and granny flats.

RENOVATION ELECTRICAL — WHAT TO PLAN FOR

    Kitchens

Modern kitchens need more than the old two-GPO layout. Induction cooktops draw serious current, integrated dishwashers and fridges want dedicated circuits, and undercabinet/toe-kick lighting has become standard. We plan every point around the joiner's cabinetry so nothing lands behind a drawer or above a tiled splashback where it shouldn't be.

    Bathrooms

AS/NZS 3000 has strict zoning around baths, showers and basins. IPX4 fittings inside zones, dedicated circuits for heated towel rails and heat lamps, and proper equipotential bonding where required. We work in with the tiler and waterproofer so the wall doesn't get opened twice.

    Extensions and additions

Adding rooms almost always means the existing switchboard needs a look. Old boards with no spare ways, no RCDs, and undersized main switches can't safely carry new circuits. We assess capacity before quoting and factor any board upgrade into the renovation scope up front.

Living in the house while it's being done

Whole-home rewires are staged — one section at a time, power kept live to bedrooms and kitchen while other areas are worked on. It takes a day or two longer but keeps the home habitable throughout.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for a kitchen reno?

Not always, but if the existing board has no spare capacity, no RCDs on power, or ceramic fuses, we'd strongly recommend combining the board upgrade with the reno while walls are open.

Can you work with my builder or kitchen company?

Yes — we regularly do. Getting us on early lets us coordinate with the joiner's plan sheet.

How long is the power off during a rewire?

For a staged rewire, power is off for short windows per section — usually a few hours at a time — not days.

Do you handle granny flats end-to-end?

Yes. Sub-mains from the main house or a new supply, board, wiring, lighting and certification.
